Juicing to Beat the Common Cold

Uggh, Tuesday was one of those days when a coworker came to work sick.  She said she was getting a sore throat and felt feverish.  Meanwhile, I was trapped in a small office breathing in her germs (we sit 5 to a room).

And, sure enough, the next day I felt a scratchy throat creeping up on me.  The first thought to pop into my mind--I need to juice!  On the way home from work, I picked up a few essentials and got right to juicing.

I know this sounds like a hokey infomercial for juicers, but the juice worked.  The next morning, I woke up sore throat free.  My coworker, on the other hand, has called in sick for the past two days.

Coldbuster Juice

  • 1 orange (peeled)

Maintaining a Juice-Friendly Lifestyle

When I first set out to purchase a juicer, I initially perused the "For Sale" section of Craigslist.  As I predicted, many people in the NYC area were looking to sell their juicers.  Sellers claimed that they had only used their juicers a "handful of times" and that juicing just "wasn't for them."

Anyone who owns a juicer knows that the greatest barrier to its use is the need to constantly restock your kitchen with massive quantities of fruits and vegetables.  For those without a car or weak arms (like me), carrying five pound bags of carrots and apples home from the grocery store can be a big impediment to your healthy juicing routine.

FEAR NOT, FRIENDS!  I have discovered the secret to successfully maintaining a daily juicing routine. I simultaneously purchased my Breville Juicer and a subscription to Fresh Direct.  With Fresh Direct, I can order large quantities of fruits and vegetables online, and then have them delivered directly to my apartment.  Literally, the deliveryman will bring them into your kitchen.  No schlepping!  And, best of all, I signed up for two months of free delivery with Fresh Direct as part of a promotion.

Of course, if you don't live in the NY area, you can always try another online grocery delivery service such as Peapod or Safeway.
